Question: This is a question for my friend, not me. But he's heard rumors about you can die from it, & I'm trying to assure him that the worst possible thing that can happen is it getting infected if the needle isn't sterilized.

if proper sterile technique is not done the effects can be deadly.
A dirty need can carry AIDS hepatics a b or c or more
if blood borne pathogens are on the needle guess where they go when they use that needle on you.

Well, like any wound, it can get infected. But also, a septum piercing has to be placed just right or it hangs crookedly and looks terrible. Tell your friend he's going to look like a complete idiot if he tries to do with without professional help. I got mine done 10 years ago by a good piercer and have had no problems at all.

best case scenario, nothing will happen.
worst case scenario, you may die, or at least get a life-threatening infection or disease.
Keep in mind, that unprofessional places are not regulated. Check the laws in your sate.. it may even be illegal. Some states may have substandard or no regulation, as well.
I would definitely go to a well-regulated, professional place. It;s worth the money to have the lowest risk possible to get infection or disease. Note that I say 'low risk,' not 'no risk.'
