My Swedish ancestors did the same thing. It helps the body release toxins (through sweat), stimulates the skin and cardiovascular system, and helps relieve the depression (Seasonal Affective Disorder) that can affect people who live in places that get dark and cold in the winter. Too much time in the sauna can lead to dehydration, especially in the winter when we aren't feeling as thirsty (and therefore don't drink enough fluids), and the shock of the cold water is thought by many to lead someone into cardiac arrest, but should be OK for someone with good cardiac health.

probably bad
