Is it true that Death smells like Hyacinths?!

Question: My stepmum says that when she deals with the dead [she's a sister], just after the patient has died, she can smell hyacinths....I know that hyacinths were used to make dead people smell nice before funerals, but she says that a lot of people can smell hyacinths after death, even though they are not in the room. She won't have hyacinths in the house because of this. I just wondered if anyone else knew of this??

When I was very young I went to a lot of funerals. I used to thnk that the smell of all the flowers was the smell of the dead person... Then I noticed the body still smelled like flowers even if there weren't any around. I thought I was crazy, I'm glad someone else noticed the same thing!

Not in my experience. There is generally a stench attached to death that sometimes you think won't wash off.

heh no, the dead smell horribly! its this smell that sticks under your nose and stays there for days and days.
not to mention of course, the chemichal used to keep them in med school for example....

That's one powerful imagination the lady has. No, death does not smell like hyacinths. Death smells of decay.
Some folks equate the odor of calla lilies with death because they're often present at funerals here in the USA. Death does not smell like lilies either.
The introduction of strong-smelling flowers was to mask the odor of decaying flesh. It's become tradition despite that modern embalming procedures effectively eliminate most odor.
