Could my anemia get worse even with treatment?!

Question: I was diagnosed with Anemia last week, with a hemoglobin level of 8 gm/dl. I was put on prescription iron which I take twice a day. I know my anemia will not be cured within a few days, but I am worried. I haven't been feeling much better, and nearly passed out today after walking my dog. I sleep for about 12 - 13 hours a day, and wake up feeling tired. I also have other health problems that doctors have yet to diagnose. The problem is my period is coming up very soon, and I am concerned it will make my anemia worse. My question is if having your period during anemia could harm you further. And if so what are the signs of it getting so bad you need a transfusion or Ivy. I just need to make sure, because I have a tendency for ignoring things before they get serious.

Anemia is a lower than normal number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the blood, usually measured by a decrease in the amount of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the red pigment in red blood cells that transports oxygen

How is anemia treated?

The treatment of the anemia varies greatly. Firstly, the underlying cause of the anemia should be corrected. For example, anemia as a result of blood loss from a stomach ulcer should begin with medications to heal the ulcer. Likewise, surgery is often necessary to remove a colon cancer that is causing chronic blood loss and anemia. Sometimes iron supplements will also be needed to correct iron deficiency. Sometimes blood transfusions are necessary. Vitamin B12 injections will be necessary for patients suffering from pernicious anemia or other causes of B12 deficiency.

In certain patients with bone marrow disease (or bone marrow damage from chemotherapy) or patients with kidney failure, epoetin alfa (Procrit, Epogen) may be used to stimulate bone marrow red blood cell production

What are the symptoms of anemia?

People with anemia can feel tired, fatigue easily, appear pale, develop palpitations, and become short of breath

Your anemia is serious. with a hemoglobin of only 8. This account for easy fatigability and SOB ( shortness of breath) because you're under oxygenated.

It's easier to treat anemia due to iron deficiency by eating iron-rich foods. Your menstruation shouldn't create a big impact on your anemia. Actually, it's the other way around. Anemia can result in skipped; irregular menstrual cycles; and can even result in diminished amts.or very short durations

What is the outlook prognosis with anemia?

The prognosis with anemia also varies greatly. Sometimes it can be easily cured. Sometimes not. Again, it all depends upon the exact cause of the anemia

With successful treatment of the primary disease, the anemia will go away.

well it will take some time for the iron to take full effect, but you will notice it starting to get better, and no having you period will not make it worse, but, too at the same time talk to your doctor, also try taking a multivitamin, and that will also help. or ask your doctor about taking a prenatal vitamin, along with the iron supplements, or if you cant do that take 1-2 children's vitamins a day.

good luck hope you start feeling better soon
