Doctors, nurse, medial staff, anybody who might know?!

Question: Why are those little puke pans in hospitals shaped like a kidney? Is there some ergonomic design or is there some history behind it, like it dates back to Hypocroties and kidneys were a source of something so medical pans were shaped like kidneys? Really, I'd like to know and what their technical name is. Thanks.

Claudiac was right about the name, but here's what Wikipedia says "Emesis basins are suited for more controlled situations. When washing out a small wound, for example, sometimes the wash water is applied from above with an emesis basin held underneath to catch the runoff. The concave inner rim helps to conform to the curve of the body."
Of course, we should ALWAYS be sceptical when we use wikipedia, it is NOT a very reliable source for accuracte info.
However, this answer sound right; the body, not just the face has curves.

They are called emesis basins, and they are shaped like that to fit around the curve of a patient's face as they are lying on one side.

Yeah they are shaped like that to fit peoples faces.

The curve is to make room for the patient's chin, as they lie in bed, on their side, and spit into it.

Your answerer #1 was pretty fantastic and thorough.

The shape of the emesis basin is an ergonomic design.

The emesis basin name however is a little misleading. Anyone working in the medical field ever seen someone accurately aim into a bin with their emesis? Maybe I just have bad luck and my patients projectile vomit. If they say they're gonna hurl, I just hand them a larger rectangular tub... emesis is not nice clean nor fits into a cute little kidney bean shaped shallow container.
