Consequences of being too light to donate blood?!

Question: My school is holding a blood drive in April. Last year I was too young and too light, so I was looking forward to donate this year. Now I'm old enough, but still under 110 lbs! I know people think it's ridiculous that I'm bitching about being too skinny, but my mom will NOT sign the form allowing me to give blood.

What exactly are the side effects of donating blood when under the minimum weight?

Your heart and kidneys help maintain blood pressure at the proper level. The kidneys filter blood and retains or excretes water thus adjusts blood pressure. You have a certain blood volume that the body has to work with. If you are a person with a small body frame (under 110) then it's too much of a shock for your body to adjust to the sudden loss in volume. Your BP can drop, and heart rate speed up to compensate. This can be dangerous causing you to pass out, or have other cardiac complecations. You also need to be concerned with your iron levels especially with a small frame.

you may pass out...

You will need the blood back after given it becuase you are so light . I am light and i cant give blood either .

you feel lightheaded, and tired but that is ok cause you are giving it to a good cause

You would be more likely to faint.

Fainting.

you might be anemic, which means you have more white blood cells than red. this can be due to lack of iron. it means that yu cant give blood cause you simply havent got the spare to give. if youdo you can get infections becuase yoru blood cant fight it off. go to the doctors and ask for a blood test, they may give you iron tablets and after a while you might put on a little weight and be able to give blood.
hope it helped.

dont worry, you will have your chance. nice to hear someone cares.

If you weigh under what you are suppose to when donating blood im not exactly sure but you may get light headed and for worst senatrio is you may pass out.But if you are determined to donatee blood you should beefore getting blood drawn eat something that lots of protien in it like a granola bar or peanut butter crackers and during and after you get your blood drawn drink plenty of water. be careful and make sure you consult your mom because i know we hate it but they do know a lot and it would be terrible if something were to happen. good luck

why don't you just gain weight?
