Sports drinks & electrolytes?!

Question: Whenever I play basketball all I drink is water. What did people drink or eat to replenish their electrolytes before sports drinks like gatorade were invented? Should I even worry about replenishing them if at most I'll play up to 3.5 hours and drinking plenty of water?

Sodium, is the main thing to replace, lost through sweat, sodium is found in salt most commonly, salt was available obviously long before sports drinks. You will perform better if sodium is replaced from that lost in sweat
