Back pain!!!?!

Question: Does anyone know how to relieve back pain. I have pain across my shoulders and down my spine. The pain radiates into my arms and legs. I have been prescribed ibrufen and painkillers but nothing seems to help. I feel dizzy and sick with the pain. I have also tried a chiropractor and have used ice and heat on my spine and neck. Any suggestions welcome as I would try anything as it is interferring with my life to the extent that I am unable to work or do normal things. I am sick of being sick. Thanks in advance.

Hi there

I also suffer from bad back pain and numbness/tingling/pain in my leg. Radiating pain from the spine can be a sign of nerve impingement and could signifiy some form of disc injury or bony abnormality.

You should return to your GP again and ask for an MRI - this will show up a much better picture of your spine, including the soft tissue structurs, which are not so visible on x-ray.

Until the MRI happens, I would advise you to do the following:

1. Take Glucosamine Sulphate (you can get this from a good health food store). This reinforces your intervertebral discs and would help a little if you did have a disc proplapse/bulge.

2. At night, sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs. This will keep the spine in better alignment.

3. Carry on seeing your Chiropractor. They are often very helpful, although relief can take some time (especially if the pain has been there for some time). Dizziness and sickness can be caused by a misalignment of the vertebrae in your neck. Adjustments would help greatly with this.

4. Avoid any activities which bring on or increase your pain levels - listen to your body. Pain is a signal not to be ignored.

5. Stay positive - believe me I lknow how hard this one can be, I struggle most days with sciatica and it gets me down, but you have to try not to become absorbed by it if you can help it. Easier said than done though, I know..........

6. Take your anti-inflammatories until the acute phase is over, then gradually reduce them if you can. Your doctor can give you something better then ibuprofen for your spine like Diclofenac Sodium Enteric tablets, so ask for them!

I hope that this helps you a little. Good luck, go and get the MRI. Take care, Isabel.

A good massage :) or get someone to stand on your back very gently!

There are many possible causes for this problem, for example spine problems. Sometimes they are caused by bad posture and lack of supportative muscles in your back.
Generally, you should change your doctor. This can be threated, but you need to be checked by specialist who can determine the cause of pain. Only then one can try to fix it.

I suffered with back pains..(back of my neck- shouldres...etc..) They said it's stressed..

I had a swedish massage--felt better afterwards..go for a second opinion- you might have some kidney infection...When my sister was feeling some back pain..and her legs and back are getting a bit numb and struggling to get out of bed...she found out later she got kidney failure..

have you seen a physiotherapist ??? get a recommendation from a friend if possible

Sometimes back pain can be caused by weak stomach muscles. The poor back takes the brunt of most physical effort which would normally be done using the stomach muscles if they were stronger. Exercises to firm and strengthen the abdomen may take some of the pressure off your poor back. You need to find the cause of your back problems so they can be tackled properly so ask to see a specialist. In the meantime I would recommend a good massage twice a week with soothing oils to relax you. However, don't relax too much because activity is a good way to distract you from the pain. Pick a sport on which you have to concentrate hard while you are moving so that your attention is fully occupied with it.
Being a back pain sufferer I can tell you that these things work for me, even if they do not necessarily cure whatever is wrong with your back.

You need to do the right back exercise frequently and take Calcium supplyment much in your food.
