Well for focusing our eyes let more light in which expands the pupil... When there is to much light entering the eye the pupils close to prevent damage to the eyes...

To allow more light or reduce the amount received by your retina.

I know that extreme light or sunlight and then going in darkness or from darkness to sunlight changes the size of your pupils. I think that you pupils just change to adjust to the change in light or darkness.

To make it more easy to see in different amounts of light. It also protects your eyes from damage...

Your pupil changes sizes to adjust to the amount of light entered into it. The less light, the harder your eye needs to work to give your brain an image, so your pupil expands. Less light, the opposite.

Well, I guess they don't go over this in school anymore, but it is so your retinas don't get burned. If they stayed open, too much light would come in. If your eyes start to hurt when it's bright, the muscle that closes the pupil is being over-worked. Enter sunglasses stage left.
