Intravenous Question?!

Question: I'm having surgery on Thursday and was wondering...where do they insert the IV? I know it's either on the outside of your hand or on the inside of your forearm but does anyone know the most common location?

I have had surgery or other procedures requiring an IV over a dozen times and all but a couple, they put it in my hand. It was either on top or in the wrist down along the line of the thumb. It really depends on your veins and if they can get a good line. I am assuming that since they always went for my hand first, that would be the most likely place unless it is not getting a good line, then they would try the wrist and go up from there. The hand keeps the line the furthest away from your body so it won't get disconnected or messed up during surgery. I only know this from my own experience.

Good Luck!
