Frequent Strep Throat?!

Question: I'm a 14 year old boy, and I usually get strep throat a lot. When I was in it 2nd or 3rd grade I had it 7 times in 1 year, and now I've had it 3 times in 4 months. Should I have my tonsils removed or is this normal?

Also, will haing my tonsils removed cure my strep throat for good?

First of all, go to a doctor. Let me tell you my history - I'm 25, and 3 years ago I had my tonsils removed. I've had strep throat, tonsillitis, the flu and numerous cold multiple times every year of my life. Three years ago I had 4 cases of tonsillitis in 3 months and they decided to take out my tonsils. The average rule of thumb to remove tonsils is 3-6 cases in one year! Since I've had my tonsils out, I have NEVER been sick at all! It's painful and a difficult recovery but it was TOTALLY worth it! It's possible to get sick again afterwards but not nearly as likely. Also the older you get the more painful it will be to have the procedure done so look into it now.

Go to a doctor.

Absolutely! Your throat may get sore at times, but it does not compare to when you have your tonsils!

ummm talk 2 ur dr about it and maybe that jsat might be what needs to b done... do u meds for it?! if so keep useing them

I've had my tonsils removed, and I can vouch when I say that I don't get sick as much as I used to, at all. Getting my tonsils removed was great, because I'm a vocalist- and it was extremely helpful- I rarely get mucus or any sort of throat based sickness what so ever.

Surely it's not like an immunity boost, but it definitely will help your strep problem...

I'm surprised that your doctors haven't recommended it.

I had Strep a lot too when i was younger. The Doctor told my mom that if i did get my tonsils removed, if i ever did get it again it could be much worse. but i didnt have it that bad. only like six times.

With six or more positive strep cultures in one year a tonsillectomy may be considered by your doctor. You can still get strep throat after having your tonsils removed. A tonsillectomy reduces the frequency and severity of strep throat infections.

Not necessarily. You need to tell your parents about this. When was the last time you had a complete physical? Blood work?
Strep throat usually appears suddenly with a severe sore throat. The throat is so sore that many people find it painful to talk or even swallow. In severe cases, breathing may be impaired. A fever may be present, though some people may only have a low-grade fever.

Productive coughing, nasal discharge, and red, irriated eyes in addition to fever and sore throat are more indicative of a viral sore throat than of strep throat, though a co-infection with a virus is possible and may explain the presence of these additional symptoms. A Rapid Strep Test or a throat culture as well as the appearance of red spots on the back of the tongue will produce a conclusive diagnosis.

My 9 Year Old Soon To Be Step Brother, Gets Streap Throught Easily...I Heard It Was From Having Big Tonsils! But Im Not 100% Sure.

I used to get it at the very least every other month. In the end I talked to my doctor and he said it would be best to get my tonsils removed. I have not had strep throat since.

You need to have a surgery done called: Tonsilectomy
That is the removal of both of your tonsils.
Your problems will be solved.
