A long time ago we berried without embalming and it was thought that sickness of the body might become air born so 6 feet deep was excepted as the norm for disease and fumes
not to travel up

i believe its so animals wont smell it and dig it up. thats what ive heard.

they dont have to be exactly but they have to be atleast 6 ft. deep....it's a law , im not sure the reason but im sure it has to do with them being to close to the surface. you can dig them deeper if you want.

they need to be a certain depth to ensure no animals dig them up or people find them. but we use caskets and stuff now, so it doesnt actually have to be.

i think most graves are like 4 feet these days.

it also has to do with the ground freezing... if they aren't deep enough, and the ground freezes, it can push the casket out of the ground... I didn't believe it either, but I saw it on the discovery channel!
