Coughing is one of the body's natural defense mechanisms. If something is on the back of the throat (other than food going down), the body thinks it's going to interfere with airflow, so the coughing will eject whatever is back there that doesn't belong.

I have the exact same symptoms you have right now. I've been dealing with this since Monday. And everyone at my job is sick. Do you ever wonder if there's literally something in the air? Like, what if the war in Iraq is making us sick. I know I sound crazy, but what if the winds are blowing all that dust and debris, firepower and stuff all over the world?

Maybe it's a sinus infection, but I don't want to get an antiobiotic, because from what I've seen, people feel better for a couple weeks, then they're sick again.

Drainage makes you cough because it makes flem in ur throught and you have to caugh it up

The mucus goes down the back of your throat to the cough center & then you cough.

Take Mucinex...(it's great)...it loosens mucus & makes a cough more productive & less frequent.
Suck on Zinc lozenges & cough drops with eucalyptus.

Feel better.

Try Sudafed. I have the same problem and it originates in the sinuses. It's all connected up there. Dry it out and the cough will go away.
