Why can't we reuse plastic water bottles?!

Question: I have always heard that it is a bad thing to reuse a plastice water bottle once you have used it. Why is that? I have family that always fills them back up with water and sticks them in the fridge to use again. Should I tell them not to?

If you drink directly from the bottle and then refill it when empty, you introduce bacteria in the bottle.

I reuse them, and I'm not dead yet.

I think it's something about chemicals from the plastic getting into the water.

I have never heard this before. I don't know who you get your information from, but thye are wrong. Plastic is one fo the materials that you can use over and over again because it doesn't keep the bacteria. Once washed, it's as good as new. We've always washed the water bottles, filled them up with water and put them in the freezer. This way, we'll have ice water whenever we want it.

About france's answer, sometimes chemicals can leak into the drink from the plastic, but that's only if the drink is very acidic. And even that's only harmful is you drink A LOT of it.

Bacteria!
