Why would one's hair suddenly turn white due to trauma or bad health?!

Question: Or something along those lines... I was just reading about John McCain on wikipedia and it said his hair turned white while he was in the P.O.W. camp... it sounds like this happened rapidly. I was amazed by that, can a doctor or other health professional tell me, in layman's terms, why one's hair would rapidly turn white?

It can from extreme systemic stress, but only as fast as it can grow. Sen. McCain was a POW for 6+ years, God bless him.

Your psychological state has a significant impact on the hormones that can effect the amount of melanin deposited in each strand of hair, but the effect of emotion takes a long time to see. The hair you see on your head emerged from its follicle a long time ago. So, graying or any other color change is a gradual process, occurring over the course of several weeks, months, or even years.
