I think it plays a role, but is not the whole story. Our sedentary lifestyles and fast-food ads bombarding us at every turn definitely play a part. Medications are notorious for causing weight gain as a side effect -- particularly antidepressants. Like gaining weight isn't the last thing a depressed person needs. I also wonder about the sheer volume of medications that get into our water sources (some that pass through the body unabsorbed and also when people flush unused drugs down the toilet). And don't even get me started on the hormones we are exposed to from meat, water and other sources. Some hormones have been demonstrated specifically to cause women to gain weight.
I truly do think genetics plays a role and I also believe that the childhood environment comes into it as well.
