I believe if you are dependant on drugs- then you can not survive without the drug (like insulin to diabetics or anti-reject medicine for heart transplant patients).

An addict is someone who depends on the drug to feed their addiction, not to keep them alive.

Dependency and addiction are somewhat similiar but the main thing is that addiction includes abusing the drug- not using the drug for its intended use. Some people are so addicted to drugs that they can die if they stop- therefore drug addiction can cause drug dependancy.

Hope that helps.

no, and yes

I always thought that drug dependent was just a politically correct way to say addict. Unless you have chronic pain from a diagnosed illness, there is no reason to habitually take painkillers like that. You would be an addict.

Drug dependence is the official name. If you look in a DSM-IV it is broken down by drug. I believe yours would be an opiate dependency
