Diet can both prevent and cure constipation so eat more foods rich in magnesium as magnesium will increase the production of hydrochloric acid in your tummy and thus aid in digestion..... the more fibre in your diet from fruits, vegies, legumes and whole grains, the softer and the larger the amount of feces will be passed.

Magnesium is needed in the human body for helathy nerves and muscle functioning and for heart health. Magnesium rich foods will aide in eliminating constipation problems for you.

Eat more foods rich in this wonderfull little mineral ie: leafy and green vegies, nuts and seeds, wholegrain breads and cereals and cold water fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting.

Magnesium is also known as the antistress mineral and will help you deal with stressy situations better.

Also, eat more foods rich in Vitamin C as vitamin C is a natural laxative ie: oranges, lemons and limes, leafy and green vegies, tomatoes, potatoes and red and green capsicums. Vitamin C rich foods will also bolster your immune system and help in lowering blood pressure.

Try to cut back on dehydrating drinks such as those containing caffeine ie: soft drinks and sodas, coffee, tea and also alcohol will dehydrate you...........for each can of soda or soft drink that you have your body can excrete up to 12 cups of water !! Caffeine is marginally better ~ for just one cup of coffee you need to replace it with 2 cups of water because the caffeine tricks our brains into thinking that we have ample water supply and encourages the body to urinate much needed fluid from our body!!

The use of laxatives will only exaspperate your problem and will do a brilliant job of robbing you of your B complex of vitamins (which are essential for healthy digestive, neural and immune system functioning) and also your vitamin C supplies. Also take a good quality multi B complex supplement as the B group of vitamins is essential for healthy digestive, neural and immune system functioning. As they are a water soluble complex our bodies can neither store or produce them. As such we need to replace them on a daily basis or suffer from the stress related side affects..... these are quite safe to take while you are pregnant. Do not buy any of the B complex of vitamins individually but rather as a whole group ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folate etc.... unless you are told to by a nutritionally oriented physician or naturopath.

Drink loads of fresh filtered water too ~ at least 2 - 3 litres per day ~ as the happiest and healthiest body will always be the most hydrated one.

  • Senna is completely natural and is a gentle laxative. It is available without prescription, but make sure you check the label first to make sure it's ok to take in pregnancy. You could try prunes (the very thought of them has me rushing to the loo!) and plenty of fresh fruit and veg.

get expecta. my doctor told me it helps. or i found this:

How can I prevent or treat constipation during pregnancy?
Prevention and treatment of constipation involve much of the same thing. Here are a few things that you can do to help prevent constipation from occurring or treat it if you are already experiencing it:

Eat a high fiber diet: Ideally, you will consume 25 to 30 grams per day of dietary fiber from fruits, vegetables, breakfast cereals, whole grain breads, prunes and bran.
Drink a lot of fluids: Drinking plenty of fluids is important, particularly with your increase of fiber. Drink 10 to 12 cups of fluids each day. It is the combination of a high fiber diet and lots of liquid that best help you eliminate your waste. Sweat, hot/humid climates, and exercise may increase your need for additional fluids.
Exercise routinely: If you are inactive, you have a greater chance of constipation. Walking, swimming and other moderate exercises help the intestines work by stimulating your bowels. Schedule exercise three times a week for 20-30 minutes each.
Over-the-counter remedies: There are over-the-counter products such as Metamucil (Catergory B) which may help soften your bowel movements and reduce constipation. Always speak to your health care provider before using over-the-counter medications.
Reduce or eliminate iron supplements: Iron supplements may contribute to constipation. Good nutrition can often meet your iron needs during pregnancy. Taking smaller doses of iron throught the day rather than taking it all at once can reduce constipation. Talk to your health care provider about checking your iron levels and recommendations to manage iron intake during pregnancy.

if your eating extra fibre u need to make sure your drinking extra water as fibre soaks up water in your bowels which can make u even more blocked up. maybe try that for a couple of days see if it helps. i also found drinking a carton of fresh orange made me go

    Prunes are good

Well, for a bowel movement then Senna... works great but I don't think you can take it while being pregnant... so I'd say lots of fiber foods. Drink lots of water, not only cause you'll be eating more fiber foods and it needs water to absorb.. but water makes your colon feel full so it wants to push it out... If you're taking iron supplements you might want to get another prescription with less iron because it may be causing you to be constipated. Also if it's just your pregnancy making you constipated.. I'm sure it'll go away over time. As for peeing problems then there's nothing that can really stop it from happening. There are some tips I can give though. When urinating.. lean forward and make sure to get it all out. Don't drink late at night. Drinking cold beverages will make it come sooner.., and avoiding beverages with a mild diuretic effect. Check the web site out that I linked. It's pretty neat.. it keeps track of what to expect each week for your baby, gives tons of info and so much more. Also gives the advice I just gave you about the bathroom problem.. Hope this helped. Congrats! and take care!

This is very common during pregnancy, fruit, veg, cereals, wholemeal bread can provide the necessary roughage to keep you system moving.

Drink plenty of fluids water, fruit juices(prune juice is excellent)

Gentle exercise- walking ,swimming etc helps

If this does not work consult with your doctor as there are other options such as Senokot but discuss with him/her first
