Why do farts smell?!

It's because of the digestive juices in you body, coupled with the bacteria.
The gases that are released are Methane, Sulfer dioxide, Nitrogen, and a few others...but it isn't because of it "rubbing agianst your poo"
Your body uses digestive juices to break down the foods in your tract so that the nutirents can be absorbed by the intestines...once all of the liquids are absorbed out of the mix, then all that is left is the gasses and solids the gasses escape and the solids are expelled...
Have someone fart into a bottle for you, take it to a lab and test it. Get people who fart often and fart around you, you can do a study and let us know.
It's because they come from a place where rotten food sits, waiting to be disposed of.
