Through exercise our bodies produce lactic acid from glucose to glycogen. It acts as a source of fuel for the heart & for muscles in exercise.

It's often a sign of body trauma. Heart failure, liver failure, lung failure, a lack of oxygen in the body, shock (usually septic or cardiogenic), immense physical exercise or a serious infection resulting in shock will release it. Lactic acid is found in our muscles and red blood cells.

it's a product of anaerobic respiration.

It is part of a fermentation part of our metabolism called the Krebs cycle. Glucose is broken down into ATP, something that the body uses in its purest form for energy. This reaction's byproduct is lactic acid.
