What is an effective method of cleaning out your ears?!

When you find it, please let me know, too. I have to go to a doctor every four months to have my ears cleaned out. He tells me that there is really nothing I can do to prevent the buildup; of course, a doctor is going to say that so that you have to keep spending the money to come back to him.
I would really like to know the answer myself, but I have been explicitly told that hydrogen peroxide IS NOT the answer.
