Is drowsiness common with a stroke?!

Question: I recently had a relative who had a stroke. She has some mild slurring and weakness, but cognizant and able to get around some. She is very drowsy day and night, often falling asleep during coversations in the hospital. Is this common?

Yes, very common.

The way it was explained to me is: a stroke is a very traumatic injury to the brain. The brain uses much more energy than people realize and heals best when it can use the most energy. So the brain, basically, shuts down the body so it can sleep and heal quicker.

Another note of interest: the brain will heal better with very long periods of sleep at night rather than several naps throughout the day. This has something to do with sleep cycles.

This should get better with time, but I was told it could take a very long time-- several years and your relative may always have some challenge with drowsiness.

Yes it is unfortunately

I've been in that same situation
