Do you have to sleep to grow taller?!

Question: Well, for a couple of years I haven't been sleeping much. So do you think that had an impact on growth (in height). During that time, I was pre-adolescence (or whatever you call it), so I think it did. If it did, any way to make up the loss? About how much is the loss if it did?
Please give proof and examples (or at least a source).

Yea, it probably would. Most growth hormone (the stuff that makes you grow!) is released while you sleep (see my source).

The only problem with this experiment is that it tests when growth hormone is secreted in normal youth who get normal amounts of sleep. It's possible that your body would do something to make up for it -- such as secrete GH later in life, or secrete it more during the day.

It depends on exactly when it happened, and when you would have gone through puberty. you could be lucky and not go through puberty for a few more years, and get a growth spurt along with that -- and be 6' 5"! But, most people go through puberty around 13 -- so if it were around that time, you would probably have lost a good 6 inches.

u grow how u grow and yes that might be but do u drink coffee????

Yes, it's not just a parenting trick, but when you're in bed, horizontal and relaxed, pressure and stress on your bones is lessened and this is why many teens who are going through a rapid growing spurt get pain at night instead of the day... because they're bones are growing.

Here is an animal study that shows the same:

yes

Studies indicate that the pituitary gland secretes growth hormone at a greater rate during sleep than when awake. Hence the conclusion that we grow more when we are sleeping.

Whether you are measuring a person's height while standing or length while supine, there are several variable technical factors. Dealing with a squirmy toddler, I was happy if I could get two measurements within a centimeter of the other. The person who can devise an instrument that can reproducibly measure height within a few nanometers is smarter than I. Difficult to imagine.
