How common is having a shunt?!

Question: I have never actually met another person who has a shunt so I can't really talk about the problems I've been having with mine to another person. I need to know if I need to get mine checked. I get headaches all the time. I get one when I laugh real hard, or just when I am walking randomly. I would also get them after each time I got out of track practice, so if anybody has a shunt can they tell me what to do?

Seeing as I've answered your questions before about medical issues, I will tell you this. Shunts are probably more common than most people think. The birth defect Hydrocephalus is the most common problem to have a shunt. There are different types a VP shunt (from head to stomach) or VA shunt (from head to heart). I would get it checked out soon.

i don't have a shunt. there are different kinds of shunts. I guess your shunt refers to a VP shunt placed in your brain versus the intra-arterial shunt that's placed in the heart. .

Cerebral shunt: In cases of hydrocephalus, a one-way valve is used to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and carry it to other parts of the body. This valve usually sits outside the skull, but beneath the skin, somewhere behind the

Headaches can be considered a major symptom of a shunt malfunction. It might need to be replaced with the shunt that has the magnet to dial in the pressure. It might mean several trips to the doctors to get the pressure right. But remember some of the headaches might also be migraine type of headaches and not necessarily due to the shunt.

Below are the symptoms of shunt malfunction:

Hydrocephalus is a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the head because of a blockage to the flow or drainage. Approximately 80% of people with Spina Bifida have hydrocephalus that requires a shunt or other treatment. The symptoms of shunt malfunction are varied and can be confusing for both families and health care providers. The most common symptoms are headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Less common symptoms of shunt malfunction can include seizures, a significant change in intellect, school performance, or personality. The symptoms of shunt malfunction can be difficult to spot. You should visit a doctor if you notice any major change without an obvious cause to find out if it is caused by a shunt malfunction. All patients with hydrocephalus should be evaluated by a neurosurgeon at least every 1-2 years.
