I was you when I was 5yrs old (a few decades ago) and I would get 4 strep throats a year plus a few colds too. The doctor REFUSED to take my tonsils out. After 2 years of me using 3 pillows at night to be able to breath(could only sleep in reclining position) my mom took me to a new doctor. 2nd doc stated the day he seen me that I should have had my tonsils taken out at LEAST 1 1/2 years beforehand and that I would probably never be able to smell again. 48 hours later he had already taken my tonsils out and ... he was right. I have never been able to smell since.. not even skunk. It almost killed me when 2-3 years later (10 years old) I added bleach to water?? nope it was ammonia and had my eyes not started watering to clue me in something was wrong I probably would have suffocated to death.
GET YOUR TONSILS OUT!!!

No real tests it is just a judgment call of the doctor.
The IV will hurt but only for 5 seconds.
After the surgery, the antistesia will make your mouth feel dry when you get up.
Recovery depends on you. If you eat popsicles like they are going out of style for the first 72 hours your throat will be numb and recovery should not be that bad. If you do NOT eat popsicles recovery will be painful and you have a higher risk of bleeding.
NO your voice will NOT change - they are not working on your vocal chords.

In my state as long as you have 5 documented cases of strep in a year the ENT will take them out. The IV is nothing major just a little poke the surgery you aren't gonna feel you'll have a sore throat for a day or two after but if you have strep all the time it's nothing you aren't already used to and your voice won't change either mine didn't and I was 20 when I had them taken out. Lot's of popsicles and jello.

I had my tonsils out when I was 18.
If your tonsils are larger than the one in the pic I'm sure they will take them out.
They will do pre op test like normal. It's according to what your surgeon orders as to what all they'll test for.
At the age of 18 I thought it was quite painful. They say the older you are the more it hurts. But just rest afterward and try and drink lots so you don't dehydrate. They should give you pain meds to take that you can crush and add to ice cream or apple sauce.
Your voice won't change, well mine didn't. Maybe just better speech with yours being SO big. I wish you luck with this.

my mom was always told not to take them out when i was a child and then when i got older i had trouble with them too. i was having trouble breathing and the sort also. if you are on insurance, they will DEMAND that you have so many infections in a certain time period and that they need to be SERIOUS infections to count. the insurance company will do everything it can to NOT pay for it. i think my insurance wanted 6 infections in a year, well i had 4 and could not breath the one time so lucky for me my dr made the paperwork to match the insurance demands. my dr said that for me it was a life or death thing and they needed to come out NOW.
as for the other questions, an iv doesnt really hurt. it can be a bit uncomfortable. there are many hospitals that now use a local injections to numb the area before inserting an IV. that is wonderful and i love it, ( i have bad veins and they usually need to "dig" around for it). but even so, it is not that bad, and no worse than say a bee sting or a prick on the finger.
the surgery itself was not painful, i came out of surgery with medications and was not in pain, there was discomfort, and for lack of better terms felt like swelling. recovery was not bad, i didnt notice a change in voice and noone else said anything either.
i will advise you that this surgery later in life (im not sure of your age but i was 30) is a bit harder than it is on a child. the recovery can be 5-7 days, or sometimes longer. i was an exception to the rule as i hemmoraged 5 days later and needed emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. this does not happen to everyone , and im sure you will be just fine.
be sure to find a good dr with good recommendations. check out the hospital and their protocal. ask alot of questions, and be sure you know and understand everything.
best of luck, and honestly it isnt that bad. (i have a track record of medical nightmares, that dont happen to "normal" people.

I had the same problems you have. I was constantly getting
strep throat and it was always sore, I was so sick and tired of
being sick, and finally one day, I just asked my doctor what
he could do to help me and he told me that I needed to have my tonsils removed. I was glad to hear that there was something that could be done. I was 16 at the time. I did hear that it's harder on a person as they get older to have this operation, but it's nothing compared to other operations.

I had to give samples of my blood and urine prior to the operation, and that was it. They do that several weeks before the operation.

Getting an IV is not major pain. It's a needle the same size as
the ones they use to take blood, except it's left in your hand
usually to give you fluids that you'll need the day of the operation. They usually give you the IV about an hour or so
before the operation. It's nothing to worry about at all.

The surgery is not painful, cause you will be asleep. The
recovery is not bad. I have had five operations and having my tonsils out was the least painful and the recovery period
is short and after you will be so glad you had them out. You
won't be getting sick all the time.

When you wake up after any operation, you feel a little confused and tired. Your throat will feel sore, but it's not
painful. I had a hard time swallowing. I kept absorbing my
own spit, with kleenex cause it was hard to swallow after
the operation. They give you ice cream not regular food.
The ice cream sooths your throat and is easy to swallow also.
That only lasts for two days if that.
But I have never been back to the doctor about step throat
since I had the operation , and I'm 42 now. Good Luck,
and don't worry about anything, cause the procedure is not
a big deal.

An IV is not bad at all, especially if you are at a kids hospital. They'll numb it for you. It's nothing more than like a pinch.

If you are seriously always getting sick It would be best to get them out. Don't be scared. It's only a few days of your life. You'll feel like you have no voice for a few days, but you don't feel like you're Dying.
