Why do I feel fatigued during my P.E. class?!


Question: I am a 17 year old male, 5'10, 136 lbs, and I've noticed that I feel very fatigued and cannot run for very long in my physical education class, whereas most of my friends are so energetic. Why is that so? They tell me that I should eat more. Is it true that I should be eating a lot at my age, weight and height, and that my lack of energy could be due to lack of food?

Manga, Manga, you too skinny boy. Anyway, your Body Mass index is 19.5 according to the government calculator for your age and height. This is on the low side but still healthy.
Is your P.E. class before lunch? Teens tend to be night owls by design and you could be trying to be too active for your body clocks idea of what you need. You could have low iron levels, especially if you don't get enough lean red meat. Don't do a supplement without checking with a Doctor, it's a simple blood test, Iron is easy to get a toxic amount of.

It never hurts to eat a light snack a half hour before strenuous activity, whole grain toasted cheese sandwich and an apple is a suggestion. Balance and healthy food is the key.

You may have hypoglycemia, a tendency towards low blood sugar, do you feel shaky and have a hard time concentrating when the fatique hits? There are blood tests but they are not always good at detecting borderline individuals.

My brain quits functioning at a glucose level of 80 and I can barely stand up, my diabetic dad once had a sugar level of 45 and should have been on the floor but was only a bit crankier than normal. I find I often have no hunger but will get a hypoglycemic episode if it's been over 4 or 5 hours since I've eaten a 300 calorie meal, especially when exercising or doing heavy yard work. I don't see a doctor for it, I just eat more frequently whether I feel hungry or not.

Mountain Dew is kryptonite for hypoglycemics, 5 or six small meals a day is the trick for that. Always carry a meal replacement bar that has fat, protein and carbohydrates, not just sugar. Sugar will boost a hypoglycemic if they are very low but it won't last long.

You might not be lacking in food but you may be lacking sound nutrition. See a Doctor for the iron test. Eat sensibly and try protien smoothies if you don't have a big appetite, there are recipes on the net for these.

Edit: Xallunee above posted many excellant suggestions but out of kindness I must caution it is possible to ingest too much water and overtax your excretory system and lose so much potassium you have a heart attack. Very rare and you have to do an insane amount of water, but this did happen to a lady who entered a Radio water chugging contest last year. But most people do not get the minimum of water, let alone anything approaching the gallons needed to cause "water intoxification".

Sounds like dehydration.

Maybe you have not been as active as you should be. Try exercising more. Eat healthier foods with more protein and calcium.

Take vitamins and dietary supplements that your body needs, drink lots of water, do regular fitness. If fatigue consists, see your doctor.

A teen your age is almost done growing. Make sure you eat 7 portions of starches, 5 of fruit, and 8-10 glasses of water. Get LOTS of sleep. I know it's impossible to get what your body needs at your age (10 - 12 hours), so try to sleep at least 8 or 9. You may have to go to bed early to wake up for school in time.

"They tell me that I should eat more." Not neccesarily. Eat what is reasonable. Don't stuff your face because chances are, you will become unhealthy and feel even MORE fatigued in P.E. Don't skip breakfast, as many teens like to, make sure you have at least one portion of fruit during lunch (you need the natural sugars) and dinner should consist of something starchy but not fatty. WATER. Is disgusting if you expect to get your 8 glasses out of a school water fountain. Take a large bottle to school everyday and FILL it with clean water (from home). The bigger, the better, and get one preferably with measurements to see how much water you are intaking. A good water plan is:

2 Glasses when you wake up
3 Glasses during the school day
1 Glass right after school
2 Glasses for dinner
1 Glass before bed

You can never take too much water because excess leaves in your urine.
Of course, something gross but I have to mention anyway is that many teens have a deep yellow-colored urine. Healthy urine is a CLEAR color. It becomes CLEAR from drinking lots of water. You will be able to see differences within a few hours if you are drinking enough water.

SUGARS are not too healthy unless they are in their natural form (sugars in fruits, vegetables etc.) Processed sugar in large amounts can be a teen's worst nightmare. Not only is it shown to cover your face in acne, but it interferes with your growth, development, and energy levels.These "bad" sugars are also shown to "feed" cancer cells in your body (We ALL have cancer cells - just typically not in large amounts. We don't want those cells to take over our bodies, do we?).

Also, Don't compare you to your friends. Everyone's body is different and has different needs, sometimes even genetic. You are a healthy height for your age but may be a little on the slender side. Just because you may have the body of an athlete doesn't mean you will have the physical capacity of one. You need to work for it.

There may be other possiblities for your fatigue, medical of course. Try this basic plan for a week and if things don't improve I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with your doctor.

Your fatigue doesn't seem to severe. I highly doubt it is a medical condition.

Take care of your body and your life - you only get one!

Uhh its P.E class i thinks everyone feels that way

well you need a good diet... also you don't have any physical resistance wich you aquire by doing sports or simply running at the gym... maybe most of you freinds do sports so that's why the are so energetic

You could have asthma. This is when your airways(bronchial tubes) are swollen and inflamed. It makes it harder for u to breathe and take in air because the space for air to flow is narrower. Asthma could develop anytime in a person's life so you should ask your doctor. Or you just might not be eating enough to supply you with enough Calories for energy.

u sound like u r a little out of shape and a bit too skinny for your height. eatttt!!!

It could be what your eating? If you eat alot of sugar and carbs you could be draining your energy. Also you have to look at the time of day you have p.e. most people get tired in the afternoon its the middle of the day maybe you ate lunch. I would say eat better and exercise more than gym class.

well make sure you don,t have health issue thats causing this.you could take some vitamin to help with energy as long as you are eating properly. also make sure you are getting proper rest at night.good luck

This answer may scare you alittle bit.. But when you went to see your doctor, did he say anything about a heart murmur? A heart murmur is basically when there is a hole in your heart, causing to make some minor, and or MAJOR problems.
When I was 17, I went to the doctor for a simple check up (I was about 5'11, 120 lbs). My doctor told me that I had a heart murmur, so they took me to take an Xray, and look up my heart, and it turned out I have one hole in my heart. I told them if I will die, or suffer with anything when I get older and they told me I will not because the whole was in one of my vain that will heal by taking some pills.
So it really depends where the hole in/ on the heart is. but beware, if it is in the bottom of the heart, your are most likely have to do an open heart surgery (which is risky).
If you really want to find out whats wrong with your heart, go see a doctor RIGHT AWAY. It is best to know whats wrong with you fast.
