Medically what happens when you stay in a Hot Tub too long?!

Question: One of my roommates spent at least 2 hours in a hot tub tonight... he says he got out and in a couple of times but for the most part he was in like an hour and a half at least.

He's bitching about feeling hot and sick to his stomach, which is what I think you get when you do that. He says his doctor opens in 2 hours and he may even go in if he keeps feeling crappy.

So my question is... what exactly happens if you're in a hot tub too long?

Assuming you're not a kid, or an elderly person, or pregnant woman of course. Assuming healthy, young to middle age adult.

How bad can it get? What are the signs? What are the USUAL effects? Stuff like that.

Anyone know?

You basically cook your organs when you're in there. You can get heat exhaustion that will progress to heat stroke. Those are are symptoms of heat stroke. Your friend needs to stay cool (but not too cool), refuel himself with electrolytes (by drinking sports drinks), and keep himself hydrated. This stuff you learn when you're training to be a lifeguard and you need to dig people out of a hot tub when they've been in there for too long...happened to me more than enough times.

An aunt told me that it can make you less fertile as it does something to your sperm but i'm not that sure if this is true and if feeling sick is a sign. I think you should go to your doctor when it opens.

I doubt him staying in a hot tub for 2 hrs with some ladies, is going to do any serious damage. He could get all pruney and nasty but you never know. I used to hang out in my hot tub for hours on end, and I'm fine. Maybe it's something he's eaten.... no pun intended. Hehe. Anywho, tell him to shut the hell up and hit up the docs. Best advice I think any of us could give.

As a rule of thumb, twenty minutes is generally the maximum time that should be spent in a hot tub in one sitting. Hot tubs are not designed for prolonged usage as it quite easy for your body to become overheated and/or dehydrated. So, if you are sitting in your hot tub, talking to friends or family, you should also keep an eye on the time and don't get carried away in the steaming water.

If you have diagnosed high blood pressure, the relaxing effects of a hot tub may work wonders for you, reducing stress and improving the condition. However, if you have also been prescribed blood pressure medications, these may cause an undesirable reaction. As always, check with your doctor first.

Maybe send him to be checked out?
