Dying and Organ Donation?!

Question: Dying and Organ Donation!?
If a person is going to die within a matter of hours and there's nothing a doctor can do to help them, and they have expressed a desire to their family to be an organ donor, but they're not brain dead!.!.!. does that mean that they can't donate their vital organs!?

I'm confused about how it all works!. I read that organs can't be used once a person has died, but!.!.!. can you really take organs from someone who is still alive and comatose (not brain dead) if there is no doubt that their death is imminent!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It all depends on what a person is dying from!. If a person had a major accident and while they were conscious they expressed wishes to be an organ donor then slipped into a coma and became brain dead, then they are kept alive on a ventilator until the vital organs (heart, lungs) can be harvested!. Once the organs are deprived of oxygen, they begin to die!. Lungs must be transplanted from the donor to the recepient at the same time!. A heart can be packed in ice immediately after harvesting but there's only a window of 2-4 hours (depending on whare you read) to transplant into the living recipient!. The liver and kidneys are also of a time-essence issue, but not as sensitive as heart and lungs!. Tissue and bone can be harvested after a person dies!.
