Do people think nurses still do a good job nowadays?!

Question: Do people think nurses still do a good job nowadays!?
It would be nice to know, with everything in the news about hopsital infections etcWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
"Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians"--ever heard that before!? Bet you have!

I think that nurses now have to be so highly qualified that they have lost the plot!.
They are academically talented but lacking in plain common-sense!

"Hands -on" nursing is a thing of the past!.

I worked in the NHS for 40 years!.
During that time nursing changed completely!.

The fearful Matron disappeared!

Ward maids(who had a pride in their job) also disappeared, to be replaced by contract cleaners who really couldn't care less!.

Some nurses are to be seen strolling around town and shops in their uniform or part of!.
Some of them have apalling finger-nails --Long,dirty and sometimes stuck on!.
Wristwatches and other jewellery (like piercings ) etc seem to be the norm now!.
Short hair tucked under a cap-where did that go!?
The cap seems to be merely an ornament now!.

Nursing is no longer a "vocation" but a job!.

I think there are still lots of nurses out there who put their heart and soul into the job for little or no thanks!.

It seems as though they are being over-trained now and no longer want to carry out the everyday tasks-leave that to the auxiliaries!.

What was wrong with starting at the bottom, and post-registration going on to train in other fields!?

I will get off my soap-box now having achieved many "thumbs down"!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

ye they still do =]Www@Answer-Health@Com

No!. But I think it is because they work long hours and are poorly paid, not because they are bad nurses!. The conditions they have to work under are dreadful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hospital infections come down to the cleaning, not the nurses!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i do believe they do and that they deserve higher salary!. there's gonna be strike among nurses starting tomorrow, because of their low salary!. when they start working after 3 yr on uni their salary is 100 swedish crowns, about 10 euros, LOWER then the salary at mcDonalds!.!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

On the whole nurses do an excellent job usually under very difficult conditions!. Those who are not cut out for the job usually leave!. Nurses are also more highly qualified now than at any time before, with more extended roles and levels of responsibilitiesWww@Answer-Health@Com

a definte YES-under extreme pressures/conditions!.
greatfully underated-till `needed`-different story then!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My bloody oath they do,,but too over worked and too under paid !!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

every time i brake some thing on my body i need some body to fix it i dont trust myself to fix it the answer is yesWww@Answer-Health@Com

The majority of us do a very good job under extremely stressful circumstances!. Nurses were the ones to instigate hand-washing regimes years ago, it is only recently that the government have got behind us on this, promoting tighter infection control/prevention techniques!. We couldn't do it on our own!. Please don't blame nurses for hospital infections, as your question implies!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think nurses do an excellent job!. I think the management do a terrible job!. There is so much pressure on everyone that they dont seem to get it right!. It is all down to money and corners are cut to make up the short fall!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes but I think they are too busy and understaffed to give proper care and 1 to 1 attention not through any fault of their own! I recently had a baby and sometimes I buzzed the buzzer and no one answered, my sheets didnt get changed (and were bloody) my baby didnt get a bath, and I didnt know how to, they kept saying they would come and show me when they were a little bit quieter, I never did get shown how to bath him!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes ,as far as they are able!. They are short staffed--rushed off their feet--surrounded by "bean counters"!. Some years ago patients stayed in hospital longer so that a) Nurses had more time to get to know them!. This made the patient feel valued and not, as today on a conveyer belt!. b) As the patient improved they required less actual nursing care leaving the Nurses time to give more TLC!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, the majority of nursing staff are wonderful, not only in doing their job, but the genuine support they offer to patients and their families!.

But like anybody else, they have their off days, make mistakes, and have their own personal problems to cope with etc!. Yet despite this they try and maintain a high level of care!.

We recently lost my father-in-law to MRSA, which he contracted in hospital during dialysis!. The pain of losing a loved one is hard enough but to think he would have lived if this hadn't happened to him is difficult to come to terms with!.

But this doesn't detract from the fact that every nurse that cared for my father-in-law was caring, supportive and hard-working!. They were over-worked, tired and stressed, and this is more to do with how the NHS is run, and not the staff!. A mistake was made and a high price was paid, but a vocational job like nursing should have the money and the staff to cope with the demand for hospital beds!.

I think they do a great job and have to put up with so much crap, they are angels!
My mum is a Mental Health nurse in A and E and she works so hard and genuinely cares about people!.
The government make it very hard for her to do her job properly due to staffing issues and funding but still all the nurses battle on!. God bless them!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yeah, we do a great job!.!.it's tough, often thankless, but we Serve!.!.we Love!.!.and we bestow Grace where others would turn away!.!.Yeah we do a great job!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi Dawn,
Like you I am an experienced nurse with other 21 years of experience!.
I think nurses today have a far more difficult job with heavier work loads, less staff on duty and increased risks of litigation!.

Many like to blame MRSA etc on the nurses but let me just say to anyone that is not a nurse that 9 times out of ten it is the doctors and visitors that bring/spread in MRSA!. Nurses these days are geared up for strict hygiene and using the alcohol based hand gels!. It's the doctors and visitors that often refuse/neglect to wear it!.
Recently I was in hospital and a doctor came to see me straight from examining the patient next door "without washing his hands" I said to him "Now wash your hands" and he tutted and said "I'm the consultant" And i replied "Yes but i would still like you to wash your hands before looking at me" he then said he did not need to examine me and stormed off!!!!

Also these days nurses are encouraged to be academic doing degrees etc but i don't always believe that makes you a good nurse!. It's empathy and ability to see the person you are caring for that is important!. I've worked with some nurses with degrees without an ounce of common sense!

KGlee!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.I am sorry you had such a horrific experience when your parent was hospitalised!. Nothing i can say can take away the anger and frustration you must feel!. BUT those people are a minority!. I have vowed that the day I stop caring is the day I stop nursing!.

So my long-winded answer is "Yes we do a great job in usually very difficult circumstances"Www@Answer-Health@Com

a lot of nurses are better than some doctors !.and do a better job!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Nurses do the best job they are able to do under the circumstances!. They work too many hours for too little pay!. They are all too often short staffed and having to do the job of 2 or more nurses!. They would love to be able to do a better job, but until the nhs gets their butt in gear and hires more nurses and gives better pay, they are just gonna have to muddle through unfortunately :(Www@Answer-Health@Com

No they dont!. Of course, some strive to but in general the standards are far lower than they used to be!. Whilst there may be some mitigation in that they government has screwed up the NHS and made it an irreversible sinking, inefficient vessel, the nurses have let their standards slide!. Its irritating that there is this constant bandwagon which every time someone criticizes the nurses (and to a lessor extent the doctors) that we get a huge outcry!.!.!.!.low paid (whinge) overworked (whinge) under resourced (whinge)!.!.!.!.it goes on and on!

I had the unfortunate experience of watching one of parents die in hospital!.!.!.!.not only were the nurses on the ward, lazy but they constantly sat around talking about soap operas and nights out! Furthermore whilst phoning the ward, the phone was never answered properly and most couldn't even speak english (Not necessarily their fault) Still if I went to work in another country within a health profession, i would endeavour to learn the language!!!!

And whether they like it not!.!.!.!.it's part of their job to make sure that the ward is clean or is cleaned properly!.!.!.

It's about time that a large majority of the nurses started to act like professionals and get a grip!.!.!.it's so easy just to blame the government all the time (even if they have ******-up the health system)

So please, let's stop adoring these people until they really deserve it!

I live in Spain now and it's ironic that the brits used to criticize the Spanish health service!. What a difference now!. The hospitals are efficient!. The doctors and nurse are attentive and the wards are clean and orderly!.

Having said all that, I will no doubt be rushed to a UK hospital in the near future to be saved by who else but the nurses!.!.!.!.I don't look forward to my shot in butt!.!.!.!.!.!.(but I did say that it doesn't apply to all)!. That's my opinion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i dont know about nurses but i can tell you that ive just come out of hospital and the midwives there were amazing! i cant praise royal free hospital enough for how thorough they were!Www@Answer-Health@Com
