It may be that one of his molars is growing!.
However, it may also be signs of ear infection!. He needs antibiotics for that!. It'll help cure the infection!.
Meanwhile, to ease the pain in his ear, get a jug of hot (not boiling) water and place a towel over it!. Get him to lean his ear over it so that he can feel the warmth entering his ear!. This is a great remedy for easing ear pains and relaxing the cochlea!.
If that doesnt work fast enough, warm some olive oil and put a few drops of it into his ears!. That should ease the pain!.

He might be clenching his teeth while he sleeps!. That happens to me sometimes, and most of the time you dont realize you are doing it!. It can cause ear aches, and jaw pain, and even headaches!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Its either an ear infection or he may have TMJ I have it and the earlier you get it looked at you can fix it I think when your younger!. Look up TMJ and have him go to a dentist to look at it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yup, ear infection!. the fluid is building up in the ear and it drains and causes it to swell near the jaw line where the tube runs!.

it could be because of his wisdom teeth!. I had impacted wisdom teeth that were pushing all the rest of my teeth forward!. This caused me to have jaw pain and a ear infection!. If he does not have wisdom teeth then it could be a ear infection alone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

either abses tooth, or earache!. if it is earache and it's bothering him that bad get him to the dr!. soon!. ear infections can get pretty serious!. my son's did!. but if there is no fever or balance being thrown off, it is probably his teeth!. either way the sooner you find out the better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
