If you MAY have heart problems, or have heart problems identified by your regular doctor but have not had a heart attack or 'heart event' then you must be referred by your regular doctor!. Primary care physicians can do some of the work of cardiologists so you can understand that the HMO would like to save some money there!. Not always!. It depends on your insurance plan!. You have to call your independent insurance carrier to find out!. I know from experience if you have an HMO you will need a referral but if you are covered by a PPO, you can usually go to someone in your network without a referral!.
