The general rule of thumb with regular ipod type headphones is that if someone standing next to you can hear the music then it is way too loud!.
I have been in the pro-audio industry for years and many musicians and sound engineers have serious hearing loss from exposing their ears to loud volumes!. Many younger people who listen on headphones are experiencing the same thing!. Once you lose it there is no magic cure to get it back!.
