Why is my doctor trying to do this?!

Question: Why is my doctor trying to do this!?
I recently started seeing a psychiatrist to help me with my ADHD and medication for it!. I think the company Strattera must give her extra money or something if she gets a patient to switch to Strattera because she kept pushing me to try it saying Strattera is the goal, it is what you should end up taking!. What!?!!? I have been taking 10mg of AdderallXR once a day for the past 5 months and I am diong fine on it, do not feel I have developed a tolerance, and have no side effects so why does she want me to go on Strattera so bad!? Do drug companies pay doctors more or something if they get a patient to take their drug!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The unfortunate answer to this is yes!. Some doctors promote a certain drug over other drugs because they will make money for every X amount of that specific drug they prescribe!. Drug companies often send 'agents' to doctors' offices and hospitals to leave 'samples' of a drug product for them to promote amongst their patients!.

Not ALL doctors are pushy about it, but it sounds like your psychiatrist is pushing you a little far!. If you feel that you are fine on your medication now then do not switch!. If she continues to press the new medication on you, then you may want to seriously consider finding a new psychiatrist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Structurally, Strattera is almost identical to Prozac!. Lilly, the company that invented both of them, is pretty despirate, so I wouldn't be surprised if she gets 'perks' for prescribing you Strattera!. You may want to report that to the medical board, however, I'm not sure that they would necessarily be convinced that there is wrong-doing as it is the goal of all Psychiatrists to get their patients off of Amphetamines such as Adderall!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have heard that drug companies will offer "incentives" to doctor's offices if they use certain drugs!. I don't know this to be fact, but it wouldn't surprise me!.

If I were you, I would consider getting a different doctor!. Obviously she is not listening to you or she would know how you feel!. Good doctors take their patients' thought, feelings and concerns to heart!. If they feel something different they explain in detail why they disagree with you!. At the very least, please get a second opinion on your meds and any other issues or concerns you might have!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, there are many ways a drug company can 'reward' a doctor for prescribing their drugs!. Sad, isn't it!

Why isn't your doctor working with you to find and fix the CAUSE of your ADHD!? You may want to FIRE your doctor - then, hire a good one!.

Best wishes and good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Find a new doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, I think that drug companies do give kick-backs to doctors who prescribe their products!. And I think it is wrong!. That being said, I've had to deal with ADHD with my daughter, and I know that Strattera is one of the medicines for ADHD that is not a narcotic!. It doesn't require one of those special prescription tablets to have filled and it is easier to get filled because the doctor doesn't have to write out a new prescription every month, they can just call it in!. My daughter did much better on Concerta and I did try the Strattera when I had my nephew with me and it didn't work very well and made him real foggy and tired!. If your current medicine is working fine though and you are happy with it then I wouldn't change it either!. Did you ask her what reason she has for pushing it so hard at you!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Since you are questioning your doctor's recommendation why don't you ask your pharmacist or compare the two medications on line!? There may be less side effects for long term use with the Strattera than with the AdderallXR!. I am not familiar with the two meds; however, the possibilities are endless!. Are you on any meds for other purposes that could eventually cause interactions!?

Not all doctors (including psychiatrists) prescribe meds to get a kick back -- in fact most do not see any reward at all!. If your ADHD is as stable as you believe it to be what caused you to add a psychiatrist to your health team!? Be patient, some times a change in medication can make a big difference -- if not you can always reverse the change!.
