I know exactly what you mean! I get it too, and it can be so freaky! It's a normal bodily function that occurs just before we go to sleep so we don't hurt ourselves while we are asleep when we are dreaming!. Some call it sleep paralysis, some attribute it to a hypnagogic state!. But it is all normal!.
To stop it from happening, sleep on your side!. It works for me!.
Good luck! See your doctor if it continues to bother you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I asked the very same question just a couple of days ago because it happens to me as well!!!

I got no real good answers apart from sleep paralysis, which i already knew!. My brother gets it as well, and we're twins!.!.!. Maybe its something passed down through families!.!.!?

I found someone else who thought they were possesed by demons, but that's just daft!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The period of NREM sleep is made up of stages 1-4!. Each stage can last from 5 to 15 minutes!. A completed cycle of sleep consists of a progression from stages 1-4 before REM sleep is attained, then the cycle starts over again!. From what you describe it sounds like stage 2 NREM sleep!. This is a period of light sleep during which sleep readings show intermittent peaks and valleys, or positive and negative waves!. These waves indicate spontaneous periods of muscle tone mixed with periods of muscle relaxation!. The heart rate slows and the body temperature decreases!. At this point, the body prepares to enter deep sleep!. So for many reasons that can cause you to become awake, you feel like you're sinking into the bed(a state of deep relaxation), and you're body can't move(also a state of deep relaxation)!. No need to worry!. Now if you were experiencing Stage 1 NREM sleep that may last for only the first five to 10 minutes!. If you were to notice the feeling of falling during this stage of sleep(right after 5-10 minutes of sleep) and it causes sudden muscle contractions, then again that would be an encounter of Stage 1 NREM sleep!. But is sounds like stage 2 NREM sleep!. It's sort of scary but your body is just very relaxed!. Avoid sleep deprivation and that may help!. If your condition were Sleep Paralysis like many here are saying, which is very natural and normal, but then it follows you into the waking state then it becomes a disorder which would usually require treatment by a doctor!. I don't believe that to be the case!. In the future, go with the flow and relax and It will soon pass!. If it causes you to freak out too much, then it could very well be a disorder requiring treatment!. Pleasant dreams!Www@Answer-Health@Com
