im not sure if this is correct but someone told me that it was because fo the salt content in your tears and they build up in the corner of your eyes because your tears evaporate and leave behind that goopy stuff!.

Because the very corners of your eyes are actually connected to your sinuses and excess snot seeps out of that exit and dries in the corners of your eyes!. Thus you have your answer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
