Basically when you see it in movies its mostly because they aren't at a hospital, the boiling water is to sterilise things, like the scissors to cut the cord with!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
I think if the baby looks like it is coming out too slowly, or is stuck, you are supposed to boil its head!. Then it struggles and comes out!.

Its actually to keep the Father busy and out of the way cos you never see them do anything with the water except make Coffee!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
