Has there ever been a drug used in hospitals to cause the patient to FORGET the !

Question: Has there ever been a drug used in hospitals to cause the patient to FORGET the pain of a procedure!?
Quoting from The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath:

Chapter Six:
"I thought it sounded just like the sort of drug a man would invent!. Here was a woman in terrible pain, obviously feeling every bit of it or she wouldn't groan like that, and she would go straight home and start another baby, because the drug would make her forget how bad the pain had been, when all the time, in some secret part of her, that long, blind, doorless and windowless corridor of pain was waiting to open up and shut her in again!."

In Plath's book, Buddy - a medical student tells Esther - the protagonist about a drug administered to women in labour intended to make them forget the ordeal rather than numb the pain!.

Is or has such a thing ever been common practice for any procedures!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Versed, or any of the benzodiazepines (Valium family) will cause short term memory loss!.

Most anesthetic drugs either reduce pain or "knock you out" but not both, so you usually end up giving them together, because you want both effects!. Although benzo's are the best known memory altering agents, I routinely see it with other agents as well--propofol, ketamine or etomidate!.

It's a humane way to deal with "breakthrough pain" during a procedure, rather than a method of social conditioning (I know that's not where you were going--I'm just editorializing!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

The character "Buddy" is metaphorically speaking!.

Any healthy mother giving birth immediately forgets the pain once she has her precious baby in her arms!. Any physical pain she may then experience related to the birthing procedure takes second place because the baby is more important to her!.

This is what the writer is trying to convey in the paragraph you quoted!. There is no such drug except for in Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie "Total Recall"!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I thought it was supposed to be natural chemicals like endorphins that make women forget the pain of labour etc!.

Or a General Anaesthetic clearly works!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Routinely, but not in obstetrics!. It's a common and standard part of balanced anesthesia, though, not a substitute for anesthesia or analgesia!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Plenty of drugs will make you forget things (or ratherm interfere with the memory formation)!.

Like, er, alcohol!. Drink enough and you won't remember the night before!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. Anaesthetics use drugs which cause, or have a side effect of, amnesia!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
