First, it depends if what you are asking about is doctors in residency or attendings!. If you're asking about rules in the US for residents, the answer is that they are limited to no more than 80 hours per week (yeah, I said "limited"), must have at least ten hours between shifts, must have one fully protected 24-hour period off per week, and can work up to 24 consecutive hours no more than once every four days (but can work up to 6 additional hours on that shift as needed for continuity of patient care)!.
As far as being an attending, some specialties require more hours than others!. ER doctors work set shifts, usually 8 or 12 hours at a time, and generally leave pretty much on time!. Surgeons and OB/GYNs on call for their patients may be called in at any time and can work long hours, but your practice is what you make it!. Other specialties--somewhere in between!.
Most hospitals start morning shifts around 7 AM and hand off around 4 to the evening shift, if there is one (this is called "sign-out), but there may still be work that needs to be completed after signout!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

no set hours for Dr's in hospitals, although most work about 12-36 or more if on call, or fewer if just doing rounds!. Dr's in offices work usually 9 or so!. This is in addition to paperwork and studying!. Residents have to do longer hours and more studying!Www@Answer-Health@Com
