In your comment following your question, there are a few words missing:
I have a really bad (and annoying to others) habit of cracking my knuckles when I get (and make others) nervous!.
Twenty years go, I developed the annoying habit of saying "You know!?" so I asked my husband, and all my friends, to clear their throat and say, "You're doing it, again" - I got over it in two weeks!.
When I was your age, I began biting off my fingernails!. My mother had exquisite hands and, one day, when I was reading and chewing away, she came over to me, held out her left hand and asked, "Does my ring have sparkle or should I have it cleaned!?"!. I said, "Your ring looks beautiful and so does your nail polish"!. She said, "And !.!. when you become engaged, what will people think of your ring when you show it with chewed-down, messy-looking, nails!?"!. Again - friends to the rescue! I think I stopped chewing within a week!.
You need to enlist the aid of others !.!.!. just tell them you do this when you're nervous but wish to conquer it!. Have you been able to "map out" under what circumstances you become nervous enough to do this!? Are you shy so do this when you're talking with someone and then haven't anything to say!? I ask this because the action, and the cracking sound, are a distraction to the person you're speaking with so give you a "wall to hide behind"!. Most young people have blanks in conversation happen to them and it happens with older people too but older people have learned to call upon "fillers" to save a lagging conversation (usually something from the "news of the day" or a question about someone in their family)!.
Hope you are able to trash your bad habit !.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
