Question: Why do the starving kids in Africa have such bloated stomachs!?
We watched this documntry in school today about poverty in Africa, and virtually all the children had huge bloated stomachs!. Why!? Why does the starvation cause that!? It confuses me, because surely not eating would make them more like skeletons!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

The condition is calledl Kwashiorkor (see link below) and is symptomatic of protein malnutrition!. You need to have salt and protein in your blood to hold fluid in the blood vessels!. With low protein levels (low oncotic pressure), the blood can't hold fluid in the vessels and so it leaks out as edema!. This collects in the abdomen as ascities!. They do not have "fat bellies," but fluid filled bellies!. There are some other mechanisms that go into a lot of complicated biochemistry!. But the end result is that there isn't enough energy to "pump" that fluid back out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

when ur starving,fluid leaks out of ur cell walls and pools in ur belly!.i forgot exactly the process,its complex,but basically ur cells are breaking down!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
I think its due to lack of water rather than food, and its a build up of gas!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
