To put it simply, you'll lay on your back (usually) on a platform!. You'll have to remain perfectly still (and you may have straps across chest/hips/forehead to help you stay still) while the platform moves your body headfirst into the MRI machine which is a circular shape!. You'll see a light start spinning and there will be a somewhat loud wooshing sound!. Stay calm -- you'll be perfectly safe!. You can close your eyes if it helps and just think about something else!. Relax!. Depending on the purpose of your MRI, it could take anywhere from 5min to 45minutes!.
As far as what they can tell from an MRI, they'll be looking for something abnormal!. MRI is similar to x-ray, but an MRI can see your tissues as well as your bones!.
