Its due to an organ around the eye called a "plica semilunaris"!.
This organ secrets a sticky mass around the debris that gets into our eyes to prevent scratching of our cornea!. When we sleep, the plica then moves the debris out of the eye when there is little obstruction to its movement such as blinking which is why more of it is secreted during the night than the day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
