Most people don't know until they get the kidney pain!. While these are generally the "first signs", it doesn't mean the stones have just appeared; generally, by the time you feel the pain, you have a fully-formed stone and will probably have to get it broken up, or else try to pass it!.
My boyfriend recently had kidney stones!.!.!. he says he can definitely tell the pain is in his kidneys!. It occurs in the lower back, and can be on one side or both, and he describes the pain as "deeper than skin or muscle"!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The first very definite sign is PAIN!. This pain starts right above your butt and can seem to be one sided, in some people it will feel like it is wrapping around your mid-section!. In some cases you can feel like you have to take a really strong bowel movement, but nothing comes out!. You can't sit, stand, walk without feeling that pain!. If the stone (s) are moving through your ureter the pain is quite excruitiating, it had me on the floor crying, as it was worse than labor pains!. My biggest kidney stones were 3mm, but it felt so much worse!. If you have this, please do not hesitate to call your doctor immediately!. If the stones are not taken care of properly they can cause damage to your kidneys, bladder and ureters (depending on their size)!. Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
