Is alcoholism genetic?!

Question: Is alcoholism genetic!?
Answers:
Yes and no!. It's genetic in the way that you have the "potential" of becoming an alcoholic!. But just because one person in your family has a problem, it doesn't mean you will!. But your chances increase if it's one of your parents or if there is more than one on the one side of the family!.

But mainly alcoholism comes down to the person!. Can you handle life's dramatic events or do you feel that drinking alcohol is the only way to cope!? In the end, it's your choice!. And if your father, or grandmother, or aunt or whatever can't handle those stresses and turn to alcohol, you may not be able to handle it either!.

Personally, my great-grandmother, my uncle on one side and my aunt on another have major alcoholism issues!. But for me, it helps to know that!. Seeing how it affects them makes me realize that it's no good!.

Hope I helped!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes! Absolutely! One time I was cleaning out my attic and throwing away old stuff, when I ran across this photo album of my family back in the 1900's, old Wild West, rusty civil war style photo's!. One picture was of a gold miner relative of mine holding a bottle of whisky, sticking out his tongue; toothless and crazy!. Strange thing, I remember taking the same picture a week before at a bar!. Same pose, with my tongue sticking out and everything!. I compared the pictures and they were an exact match!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Those with a history of alcoholism in their family are much more likely to have a problem with it than those without it in their genetics!. While it isn't one of the main reasons, it does play a part in the disease!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not exclusively genetic, but there is research to suggest that if there is alcoholism in ones family, that you may have an increased propensity towards it!.
But ultimately you are in controlWww@Answer-Health@Com

Both my parents were and so am I!. I was put into foster care when I was 5 yrs old and never knew about my parents drug and drinking problems 'till a few years back after I was into the same habits myself!.

Genetics do play a role!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, but you would have to 'set off' the gene by drinking!. There is a higher chance of you becoming an alcoholic if one or both your parents are!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

its not necessilary but it can be and children of alcholic parents have a greater riskWww@Answer-Health@Com
