Is there help for obsessive nail biting, skin picking?!


Question: Is there help for obsessive nail biting, skin picking!?
I bite my nails, pick at my acne and "crack my knuckles" when I'm bored or when I'm under stress!. These may just seem like bad habits but I've tried for years to stop and I just can't!. I feel like the habits started as a response to stress and because I did them so often I now do it when I'm simply bored because it's such a natural act to me!. Even when I am aware that I am engaging in the act I still have this uncontrollable urge to do it, almost like an addiction!.

I can relate!. I used to do that!. ( pit my nails so low that they would bleed!.) A few things that I did were nailpolish remover on your fingers (it tastes really bad so you probably won't bite your nails), and I put rubber band on my arms and whenever I realized I was doing these things I would snap it (I know it seems kinda drastic but it worked), and I would try to find something else to occupy me so I wasn't bored (listening to music, taking pictures, drawing, writing, anything) Eventually I stopped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I haven't bit my nails since early May!. I just got tired of looking at my raggedy nails and I completely stopped!. As for the picking and cracking knuckles I still do both of those!. If I don't crack my knuckles my hands get stiff and my mother has stopped me to stop picking at skin since I was a teen, I'm 23 now and I still do it!. If you do something you don't like just remember if you stop you can be much better!. I have beautiful nails now!. If you want to biting you nails!. Just start taking care of them and in a couple you see that they look much better!. If you feel the urge to pick take your mind to somewhere don't think about it!. If you're stressed find an outlet to take your mind of it!. Get a hobby, read a book!. I hope this helps and it makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only person in the world that does the same little habits!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try to be aware of when you are feeling bored erly on and make decision to do something!.!.!. anything (make a list of stuff to do when bored)!.

the suggestions for the nails are good but they aren't going to help your scarred face from picking acne and knuckle popping!.!.!.!.you need to substitue things that will be good for you!.!.!. even if its eating an apple!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) to me, and it can be treated with medications!. See your MD or a psychiatrist to get meds prescribed!. I have OCD and it really is a compulsion over which you have no control; the meds really make a difference but I still have breakthrough at times!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Learn proper meditation techniques and begin a daily practice!. Your stress level will definitely decrease and you will become more focused and aware!.
An excellent book for starters is entitled, "Wherever You Go, There You Are!." by Jon Kabat-Zinn!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Perhaps wearing gloves might help!. For nail biting this is certainly a much better option than wearing a muzzle like the greyhounds!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
