It's kind of a scientific mystery, although there are many theories!. One popular theory (among anthropologists, anyway) is that it is an evolutionary "leftover," to synchronize group behavior; that back when pre-humans lived in groups, yawning would often signal "bedtime," and the yawns would spread, encouraging the entire group to have the same sleeping patterns!.

It's also been found that among chimpanzees, yawning is contagious as well, and not only that, but seeing a chimp yawn can trigger yawning in humans, and vice-versa!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Heyy,

The so-called herding instinct is a social tendency in humans to identify with and model many behaviors and beliefs after a larger group of individuals with whom they identify!. This is sometimes referred to as "following the herd!." Such people are sometimes labelled with the derogatory term "sheeple!."

Since the herding instinct includes both behaviour and belief, the term 'herd behaviour' describes only a part of this complex phenomenon in humans!. So I do believe that hearing that behaviour over the phone would entice one to also yawn :P

I don't know why, but I do know that adults don't "catch" yawns from kids or animals!. Which I find interesting!.

Could be that everyone breathing the same stale air need to yawn and when one person does it then everyone does it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
