What causes black or very dark stools?!
Question: What causes black or very dark stools!?
Is it a deficiency in some type of mineral etc!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
Answers:
Sometimes it is caused by some type of internal bleeding (blood turns dark red/black when it gets old)!. Usually something like intestinal bleeding or stomach bleeding!. If it is like this regularly, you should go in to the doctor for a checkup!.
Also, various foods (I can't list them!.!.!.they are hard to really determine and it varies with each person) can cause the stool to be dark or black sometimes!. I would imagine that foods like something really strong and 'dye-like' such as!.!.!.red cabbage, could cause a dark looking stool due to the dye effect that it has!.
I take Vitamin B12 complex supplements every 2 or 3 days!.!.!.and it makes me urinate almost a 'neon green' color as if I am radioactive or something!. lol It's just the dye effect from the pill itself - it is an odd color and causes that greenish color when processed and expelled by the body!. :-)Www@Answer-Health@Com

The last poster was right it could very well indicate that you have blood in your stool but are you taking an iron supplement or a multivitamin!. Iron can also make your stool dark!. It can also be caused by eating something as simple as beets!. If you have not taken an iron supplement or a multivitamin and your haven't eaten any beets then you need to see a doctor!. This could be an indication of a very serious problem!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Pepto bismol or bismuth can also cause some black color!. If you're not taking Pepto, or an iron supplement (or if you stop them & it doesn't go away), definitely definitely go to a doctor to check for occult blood!. There can be different reasons for blood in the GI tract, not all of them alarming, but you do need to find out what is going on!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Dark stools can be caused by a lot of iron- either iron in blood, or iron from eating a lot of meat!. Taking iron tablets (for anaemia, for example) is enough to cause it, as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
