Prolonged vomiting after outpatient surgery in a child?!

Question: Prolonged vomiting after outpatient surgery in a child!?
My 8 year old daughter had eye surgery this morning!. She was discharged one hour after she woke!. She was actively vomiting even as they wheeled her to the car!. It is now four hours later she is still vomiting!. I called the hospital and was told to give her benedryl and wait for the surgeon to call when he was out of his other surgeries!. She threw up the benedryl!. I am concerned that she will become dehydrated since she has had no liquids since last night!. I've tried water, 7-Up and popcicles; she threw them all up!. Any suggestions while I wait for the Dr!. to call!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
It is probably due to effects of anesthesia!. Some people have exented nausea with general anesthesia!. Benadryl is a good idea- but don't give more if you just gave some and she threw it up!. If they gave her an IV in the OR, she likley got quite a bit of extra IV fluids and so the chance of her getting dehydrated is pretty low!. You have to be vomiting for quite some time and usually have diarrhea as well for 24-48 hours prior to requiring IV rehydration in an ER!. Keep give tsp-tbsp sized sips every 5 minutes or so of gatorade or something like it (no carbonated bevs!.!.!.) and keep an eye on her urination over the next 12 hours!. If she has zero urine trips and is still vomiting persistently in 12-24 hours, then go to an ER for IV fluids!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is not unusual after a surgical procedure!. The anesthesia and medications can cause major vomiting!. It should be better by tomorrow!. You might want to ask her doctor for a prescription for phentergran for nausea!. They have it in suppository form and it works real well!.

Because you have to have the anesthesia on an empty stomach, it will cause nausea!. This and any medicine she was given before she could poot something on her stomach, can cause this problem!. I think the Phentergran in suppository form would be best!. But, her doctor needs to know and he may have something better than that to stop the nausea and vomiting!.

Poor baby, hope she gets well soon!. I hate it when children are not well!. I will remember her in my prayers!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
