You spend all day in darken windowless rooms, feeling like a mushroom!. You make patients do uncomfortable awkward positions, often when they are badly hurt!. You have to deal with cranky radiologists, that think your positioning is rotated, or the film is not properly exposed!. And then there are the barium enemas, and barium swallows!. All in all, I did not like it much!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Radiologic technologists (the proper term for an x-ray tech)do more than just x-rays of bones!. We do fluoroscopy studies (involving the intestinal tract and barium), arthrograms (assisting the radiologist with injecting contrast or dye into joints for evaluation) and myelograms (assisting the radiologist with injecting contrast into the spinal canal)!. If you work in a hospital setting, you will do portable exams in ICU, CCU, the ER and even surgery!. Some RTs take x-rays in the morgue!.
Most RTs will also become proficient and licensed in other modalities, such as mammography, CT and/or MRI!. This training does not require any additional formal training, and is usually learned on the job!. The more licenses you have, the more money you can make, as you will be in higher demand!. It depends where you work!. I used to work 17 hour shifts on the weekends in a busy ER and that sucked, but I did have off all week!. Now I do 4 10 hour shifts as a mammo tech and do bone density also!. It's great to have a clinic job- no weekends or holidays!. You have to be able to handle the blood and guts to make it through school though!. Most people have xrays for a reason, they are sick/hurt!. After all is said and done though, its a great job compared to others!. You get to wear pajamas everyday and there is no take home work!. The pay can also be excellent if you find the right job!. You can make extra for working evenings, weekends, or nights!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
They have to propery hang and pull down xray films, many are cross trained in CT, ultrasound, mammograms, or MRI's!. Overall they get paid pretty well but it is a demanding job and if your technique is bad you will not last!. Another bad thing is the hours if you work at a hospital, many times it would be 2nd or 3rd shift and weekends!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
