It's very different with every person, but one thing is it is not just a bad headache!. You can even sometimes get an aura (a preceding phase often with visual disturbances or odd sensations) without the headache!. My Dad sometimes get's this!.

A migraine must last at least four hours!. It consists of three phases!.

The pre-drome phase is where an aura is often present!. For a lot of people this is visual disturbances, but numbness and tingling and just strange sensations can occur!. For my dad, he gets swirls and finds it hard to focus on a point (he says if he's looking at the computer screen when he gets it, he can only see the mouse pointer out of the corner of his eye, it disappears if he looks right at it)!. I often have my vision go strangely out of focus, but don't get any other visual disturbances!.

Then comes the headache phase!. It is moderate to severe head pain and is usually (but not always) on one side and pulsing!. Imagine your brain feeling like it's going to go 'splat' inside your skull any minute, or someone is driving a spike through your head!. It's like that!.

Sensitivity to sound and noise and nausea, and sometimes movement are the most common accompanying symptoms!. Usually literally the only thing you can do is lie very still in a dark quiet room!. The people who come on here saying they're having a migraine right now, are unlikely to actually be having them-I've never known anyone who can so much as sit in a lit room, let alone sit and look at a glaring computer screen!.

Then comes the post drome phase!. This can last longer than the migraine itself sometimes-for example, my headache lasts about four to six hours but my post drome phase lasts about two days!. You're often really, really tired, and residual headache and nausea can still be present!. Temporary depression and irritability are also common!. I have, on occasions, found this more distressing than a migraine!. Feeling like you're going to burst into tears every five minutes and like you haven't slept in a week is not much fun!.

But it is different for everyone!. It's difficult to generalise!. Also, while some people find over the counter migraine relief that works, others have to get something stronger from their doctor!. I don't think I've known anyone who can take tylenol though to make it go away!. It's just never strong enough!.

They can be inherited by the way, so if you have a family member that suffers from them, you're more likely too!. My dad has migraines though and strangely I'm the only other one our of five kids who has them!. Weird!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
